How do doctors put you to sleep during surgery?

I have operation in about 2 some-more days as well as we am SO nervous. I’ve never had operation before. The doctors pronounced they have been starting to put me to nap prior to surgery. Do they give me the shot or something else? Will we feel anything when I’m asleep? Sorry I’m being such the baby,I’m 12.

They give you an IV ( a needle that stays in your arm ). When their ready they put some meds in the bag and by the time you count to 5, your asleep. You can’t feel the needle in your arm at all when its in. I know its scary at 12, even at any age, but don’t worry. Millions of people are put asleep every day for surgery.

Yes… They put a mask over your face, this is where the laughing gas kicks in when they release it into the tube… you wont feel a thing, and you wont even notice when you fall asleep. It will only feel weird when you wake up and you might feel groggy and tired.. from the drugs. Dont worry youll be fine.

Most likely you will be put under with anesthesia which is a gas that will put you to sleep. The Anesthesiologist will put a mask over your mouth and nose in operating room, and give you the anesthesia through that. Sometimes you can pick flavors… that’s what I did. And to be honest, it smells awful, regardless of the flavor. But, you’re asleep within no more than 10 seconds. After though, for a lot of people (especially me) it can cause a lot of vomiting, just a heads up. That’s the usual routine.. good luck!

They will probably start an I.V. before you are taken into surgery. This will allow them to give you medication, and possibly the anesthesia/drug that puts you to sleep. They may also give you a gas through a mask that will put you to sleep. You will probably remember counting backward about 2 or 3 numbers and … lights out. You won’t feel, or remember anything, while you’re asleep. You will probably be fine, but let your parents and doctor know that you’re scared. They may be able to give you something to help your anxiety.

I got put to sleep yesterday for surgery as i got my tonsils removed. What happens is that you are given the anesthetic through your hand and it travels up through your arm. The person doing it tells you to take 10 deep breaths and by the time you get to 10 you will be asleep. They also tell you that you will feel the anesthetic traveling through your arm and may be cold but i personally didn’t feel any coldness. Its weird because you can actually remember going to sleep but i found it interesting. After that all’s you remember is waking up in the recovery room.
    Have fun :)

guys, relax. The truth? It feels good when they give you the sedative/anesthesia. It’s like a nice high, relaxed feeling for a minute then you fall asleep. It’s great

When i had surgery last year they gave me 3 different drugs, 1 in my IV, One via an oxygen mask prior to surgery and then they injected me with a drug that said would “burn”

The drug that burned was more of a warm fireplace not like burns and it only last for 2-3 secs and then i woke up

Not to worry. It’s actually wonderful. The worst part is waking up after. When you get ready for surgery, your surgeon will come answer questions. They will put an IV in your arm and start you on regular saline solution. Then your anesthesiologist will come and inject a solution into your IV. Within 5 seconds you’ll be slap happy and talking non-sense. You will laugh and have a hell of a time. They will come get you and you will watch the ceiling go by as you are wheeled into the OR. Once there you will watch things happen around you but it will be blurry and funny. Then your anesthesiologist will sit at your head, day hi and then put a mask over your face and say “night, night!” You’ll barely hear the words before you are OUT. Then you’ll wake up and wish you didn’t. You will want so much to be back where you just were, smiling and happy. But nope, you’ll be in pain and in the reality of recovery from your surgery. I’ve had 4 surgeries so far. And by far, for all of them, the beginning was the most fun. Waking up sux.

They don’t usually use gas. Its thru an iv. Most of the time its propofol. And maybe a halothane to keep you sedated. Im a ca in surgery and have seen over 500+ surgeries and have never seen gas used.
