How long does surgery for torn meniscus take?

My father is carrying operation to correct a ripped meniscus in his knee. He’s carrying it finished in a sanatorium as well as doesn’t have all a sum yet. we am presumption it’s arthroscopic surgery. What I’m wondering is do they put him to nap for it? Is a liberation time long? He has a sincerely earthy pursuit (a office building upkeep physical education instructor in a school) as well as we’re presumption he’ll need a month off. Also, how prolonged will he be in a hospital? we am receiving a day off work since a sanatorium where he’s carrying it finished is about an hour out of town. Thanks!

Surgery for a torn meniscus can take a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the surgeon. Most likely, the actual surgical time will be 30-45 minutes. Some surgeons I know can do a simple knee scope and meniscectomy in under 10 minutes, and others take longer. A teaching hospital with residents and med students might take hours.

Knee surgery can be done under general or spinal anesthesia, or local if the patient is tough and the surgeon is slick. Where I do knees, the surgeons are fast, so we use general, because I can use short acting drugs and have the patient up and ready to leave the facility in about 20 minutes.

Recovery – that’s something to ask the surgeon.

Count on spending the day at the hospital. Take a book. If he’s not the first case of the day, then the start time is an estimate, and you may be waiting. (My husband’s recent surgery started an hour late. It happens.) Also, in a hospital, they are not geared toward getting patients up and out like they are in surgery centers, so add 30-60 minutes for that. If it takes less than the whole day, consider it a blessing.

    I hope he does well.

They didn’t put me completely under. But you are pretty out of it and you will be too groggy to move for a bit. By the time you check in, fill out paper work, have surgery, and recover enough to get back in the car it will probably take 3 to 4 hours. I could walk afterwards, but it took a couple of weeks to get the muscles back to where you feel comfortable. I think a month is plenty of time to get back to doing a physical job. However you surgeon knows his particular case best and can give you the best answer.
