A variable amount of swelling can be expected following the surgery. This swelling usually peaks on the second day and should begin resolving on the third day. You can limit the amount of swelling you will have by using ice for the entire first day. The more ice you have on the first day, the less swelling you will have on the second day. Please remember to put ice on the first day even if it’s somewhat uncomfortable to have the cold next to your skin. If you have swelling on the second day we recommend that you continue with the ice therapy.
On the third day, you may notice that your jaw muscles are stiff, and it may be difficult to open your jaw as wide as you used to. This will resolve with the help of moist heat. Actually, moist heat is preferred after the second day. You can apply moist heat to your face on the third day, and this will allow your muscles to relax more and open wider. It should also help reduce any swelling that you may have.
Ice may be applied to your cheek(s) to help prevent swelling for the first 24 hours. After 24 hours ice may continue to help ease the pain, but will be useless in prevention of swelling. If the operation was just a simple extraction of erupted teeth swelling may be very minor or not present in which case ice is not necessary.
When lying down or sleeping have your head elevated with a couple of pillows. This will help with the swelling as well.
Use bags of frozen peas instead of ice cubes to numb your cheeks–they do not leak moisture and are more comfortable.
i hope that this helps you. i had all four of mine removed along with two others all in the same day….i was swollen for about 5 days.
