Is it good to undergo surgery of abdominal hernia for an eighty three year old woman?

I have a mom who will bear a operation to her intestinal hernia as well as her age is 83 years old. Is there any damaging outcome a operation will means her? (to her health) Is it dangerous or as well risky? Thank you.

in this case if she has any underlying disease tat still undiagnosed may cause problem in operation table. so she need a good preoperative check up and should be maintained the whole surgery by a experience anesthesiologist and surgeon. the role of anesthesiologist is vital in this operation.

As people age, their respiratory status decreases, ie: they usually have more heart & lung problems, renal problems, diabetes, hypertension, etc.
To undergo surgery, her risk would be evaluated against all her other medical conditions (and previous surgery), and especially her airway status (ie: she may have been a heavy smoker for a long time). Her airway will be maintained at all times, and the anaesthesiologist would not do the surgery if he/she thought it was too risky. (Sometimes though, in emergency situations, people have to have surgery so they are put under anyway). Patients are given an anaesthetic risk category – if they are high, there is more risk. the airway is the priority and is always watched during surgery – drugs are drawn up before the surgery starts to reverse such things as cardiac arrest, breathing difficulties, etc. ANY surgery at any age is always risky, but more so for older people as your Dr should have told you. Any decisions about whether a surgery or not goes ahead ultimately lies with the anaesthetist. However, anaesthetics and surgeons are very sophisticated nowadays, so don’t worry too much. Just be supportive during and after and be glad she lives in an age where surgical miracles really do happen!
