    Also, pain doesn’t kill. It takes more than that to do someone in. People died from a lot of things, and from what I’ve heard, it was most likely to be infection. Remember, there were no antibiotics then either.

    It’s not so much the anesthesia that saves lives, but the careful monitoring and resuscitation by anesthesiologists.
