		<description>That would require accurate records to have been kept prior to he introduction of anesthesia in the 1800&#039;s, and I&#039;m certain that wasn&#039;t done.

Also, pain doesn&#039;t kill.  It takes more than that to do someone in.  People died from a lot of things, and from what I&#039;ve heard, it was most likely to be infection.  Remember, there were no antibiotics then either.

It&#039;s not so much the anesthesia that saves lives, but the careful monitoring and resuscitation by anesthesiologists.</description>
