My ACL as well as MCL were ripped by the goalkeeper receiving me out in soccer. This is the ensuing surgery, which essentially incited out to be only the range of my knee, saying which it proposed recovering upon it’s own.
My problem is a torn meniscus. I had this problem 2 years ago and had this surgery. Best thing I ever did. My right knee feels great. About 6 weeks ago felt stiffening and pain in the left. Sure enough, another torn meniscus. Going in on 8/24, with the same surgeon and getting it taken done immediately. It’s amazing how good it feels to walk without pain. I advice anyone with the same problem, if you can, take care of it right away.
It took awhile and several times I thought it would never feel the same. But it worked itself out with strengthening and time. I am playing soccer without any issues or feeling different. But it will be a process of you thinking it’s not getting better fast enough, or won’t feel the same. But it will… at some point you’ll just realize, “I don’t have any more problems with how it feels.” Good luck!
that’s good to hear. it took me a lot longer for playing soccer comfortably. Like 8 months before I could really play. But even then it took another 6-8 months before I really felt like I was healed and not even think about it while playing (and playing a lot harder).
I had ACL and MCL reconstruction on my knee. The first 3 days following surgery are the worst. By the 4th day I started feeling better. Within 6 weeks I was walking without any crutches or brace. 3 months following therapy, all was good. I’m back to playing baseball again.
Yes… he thought I was going to need reconstruction on initial diagnosis and from the MRIs. So when I went into surgery (about a month after the initial injury), he determined it was healing on it’s own. He tested the strength of it (as you can see in the video), and felt there wasn’t a need to reconstruct.
I’d say a new MRI after a month or so, should be able to tell if it’s looking better. But surgery like mine may be the best way to test it out. Regardless, your knee will hurt for awhile.
Great video! What did your doctor say? There was no need to reconstruct your ligaments? I think i’m having the same sort of problem. I had my injury just a month ago. MRI shows that the ACL is partially torn, but all the anterior draw tests my doctor makes are negative. The joint seems stable, but i’m still feeling pain when i’m bending my knee. Now my doctor wants to make an arthroscopic surgery to see if the ligament started healing on it’s own or it is necessary to reconstruct the ACL. Alex
A bit of an anniversary for me: This time 2 years ago was right after my injury. I relaxed and watched movies with painkillers in my house, while everyone was enjoying the 4th of July, the beach, drinking, being outside.
I actually enjoyed the downtime a bit. And looking back, which you will too a year from now, you’ll ALL realize it wasn’t so bad (hopefully).
I’m happy to say, I’ve been playing soccer extensively again, and it doesn’t bother me a bit anymore!!
I have to have this same surgery done 07/10/09 I’m a little scared but I know everything will be fine. It really helps is you like the person that’s going to be cutting on you and I like my surgeon.
They’ll give you some simple stretching exercises. Work on that first. Straightening your leg out next to your other one. Stretching it back… work on full range of motion. Stretch hamstrings, calves, and doing squats with no weights against the wall. Weeks of that first till you’re not feeling pain and feeling stronger. DON’T do leg extensions on a machine with weights. Bad for you.
Thanks for the reply, I was hoping I could start back on the B-Ball court after a few weeks but apparently its gonna take probably 6 months, any exercises to help strengthen the knee?
The surgery went well. But you won’t be playing in a few weeks. You’ll need to rest for a couple weeks, then start a slow rehab. It could be anywhere from 4-9 months before you are really ready to play again. Take it slow. You don’t want to push it. And you’ll be happy once you’re strong again.
It’ll start looking better pretty soon. Luckily arthroscopic knee surgery is only 3 small holes to get in. Just think about 10 years ago, you would have had the whole side of your knee sliced open, with a huge scar the rest of your life.

I think it was about 5 hours from getting there, pre-op, surgery, and then ready for discharge.

They did 3 holes… one for the camera to see what they were doing, two for operating on it. Small holes… they went away weeks after the surgery.

that is rough stuff. i’m luckily playing soccer fully again. it sucks, but you should probably see if you can get surgery to replace it.

from the ortho books i read, ligaments arent so good at healing themselves, they just get worse….
