In 1996 i fell and tore my meniscus.I had it repaired with surgery. My job requires my constant walking and climbing.I've been doing this for 13 yrs. after the surgery.I've developed a bad case of D.J.D and osteoarthritis in 2007,Ater numerous drs. visits and Depro shots, the knee has started locking up on me.I've been to two orthaepedic doctors and after an mri they both came to the same conclusion ,they both agreed i would need a total knee replacement. My other knee has a slight case of osteoarthritis.Could my my tear in 1996 and subsequent climbing and walking have contributed to my needing that knee having to be replaced?

Dear Doctor,
i had a knee operation (meniscus tear) on Feb '10 and it was painfull and it took me more than two months to walk properly.
the problem now is whenever i sit for more than 5 minutes or i stand for more than 5 minutes i have to bend my knee to make it click so i feel better.
i have visited my doctor and he always telling me that i have to strengthen my leg muscle so it doesn't touch the patella and this click would disappear. frankly speaking i started to believe that my operation failed or something wrong is there cause my life is not normal and i am even afraid to run!! please advice me...thank you in advance for your help

Dear Dr. Reznik,

I recently had arthroscopic knee surgery and am having a lot of problems. I've had this same surgery a few other times and had no problems. The first two days after surgery went well, but on the third day my knee became extreemely painful and the swelling increased. I can barelly walk. I'm a chronic pain sufferer and am used to hurting but this is almost more than I can bear. I have found some petechiae on my upper and lower leg that come and go. Is there any reason that I'm having so much trouble this time? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

As always a good exam is the key to the best diagnosis. If your knee is found to be stable and the signs of a meniscus tear have resolved then you can slowly return to activity. As a rule, most minor knee injuries resolve in 4-6 weeks. Those knees that remain painful, swell, lock, buckle or give way should be re-evaluated for a tear and treated appropriately.
If you have no symptoms, no swelling, no locking, no pain then certainly light activity should be fine.

Hi Dr. Reznik, i started playing tennis a month ago and after three weeks i started feeling a little pain in my knee, went with a Orthopedic and told me i had a little injury in the middle meniscus, and told me i had to rest, then i went with another doctor and told me i have to stay home, if i can walk perfectly is it extremely necessary to stay home??

Improvement with NSAIDs is a good sign but continued instability is not. It sounds like you are looking for someone to say it will all magically go away. If you do not improve in 4 to 6 weeks from the injury or you continue to be unstable you must see an Orthopedic surgeon for an exam. Again, there is no substitute for a good exam by a skilled MD in this setting.

Thank you for the reply. To follow up, it's now been 10 days since the bowling injury. I was on 500mg Naproxin, but switched to aspirin due to stomach discomfort. The swelling is down & the pain is minimal. However, my gait is still quite slow and I'm still getting the clicking & popping from the left knee but not continuous. The knee feels a bit unstable, yet I can bear full weight on it. Stairs are tough unless the leg is straight. Is this normal after 10 days? Any further thoughts?
