I am 22 and 3 months ago had to have this surgery on 4 different levels of my spine. One disc had to be replaced, while the others were scraped down to fit back into the spinal canal. I have an 8 inch scar on my back, but it is the best thing I have ever decided to do. I have spinal canal stenosis, which makes my spinal canal more narrow than it should be. The immediate pain from the surgery was so much easier to deal with than the burning and shooting pain in my leg.
i may ave to get this surgery done,, i have a large left postero lateral disc at L5/S1, also a minor right sided postero lateral disc at L4/5 level where there is also a small annular tear, and at L4/5 and L5/S1there is moderate dehydration,, by back and all the way down my leg hurts like hell all the time due to sciatica, i had the epidural injection done but it did not work, and i cant take no more pain killers cause my stomach is burned out from takein them.
Awesome video. I have had this procedure twice. The recovery takes about 4-5 months and is not too bad. It depends how hard you rehab and listen to your doctors. I am doing everything that I used to do before the surgery with few to no limitations.
I had that surgery in 2000 and it took a good year, but I was back at the gym in 3 weeks after the surgery under guidance of a physioligist. Good as new now!!
I had disectomy 2 months ago. I still have some pain in the wound region, feel like something is stingin inside, not the same pain I used to feel before, I guess it is part of the wounds of surgery. I feel some pain when I sit in the coxis area, but I can move freely, I can run, I can jump, I can drive, I can bend, I mean, I absolute would change again my past sintomatology for my current few hassles due the surgery. Do it, do not hesitate. I wasted 10 years trying to convince myself livin pain
At only 17, I would talk to your doc, and perhaps explore other options first, such as Physical Therapy. It also depends on the severity of the herination, and the pain it’s causing. I spent 8 months trying all the non-surgical options, but nothing worked. Finally I had this (exact) surgery, and that took care of it.
my name is carlos and i have the same operation , i did have some fears but i did it, the proces to recovery is long for a full recovery, you can NOT do the same things like before ,like i can NOT run ,but i do the ski machine with the same results ,i walk normal and look normal you just have to know you limits
i had a micro-discectomy….was in the hospital for 5 days. Stitches were removed after 2 weeks. (was able to walk soon after the effect of anesthesia waned off) but it took around 3 months to regain complete strength in my legs. (coz you lose quite some amount of motor neurons in the surgery).
Why do you guys think twice about surgery?
I had a herniated disc 6 years back….i had surgery after 3 months of detection…and haven’t had any problems thereafter. (I have been doing all the crazy things i used to do before the herniating my disc)
I suggest those of you who are worried about surgical options, to not worry and do consider it!
(depending on your physical fitness, age and general health….surgery might be a breeze for a few…as it was for me).
I tried chiropracty, massage, epidurals, exercise, etc. If you have low back pain, mid-back pain, or whatever it may be, there is a really great read called “Healing Back Pain” by Dr. John Sarno. It conveys the most Responsible Content on the matter that I have ever come across and is NOT “about” anatomy in general. You can google his name – don’t have to buy the book. P.S. I’ve had 2 discectomies in the past – didn’t know better, and…..yeah, it’s a really worthwhile read.
In June of 2007 I had L-5 S-1 postero lateral disc effected the right leg with numbness and stabbing pain and then eventually lost all feeling in my foot and strength in my leg. The doctor made a one inch inscion, went in and cleaned out the disc with no fusion and I have to say the surgery was a sucess. The first 4-6 months after were hard with rehab and any swelling or inflamation would trigger the nerves to act up. Now over two years after I’m very thankful to say that I workout 2-3 times per week, play sports and also trying to get back into the military.
