Lars has said that they would have recorded albums like Load/Reload a lot earlier if Cliff had lived. Cliff was always the least stereotyical metal head in the band so he would have pushed for a more looser style.

masonismyson I agree with a lot of your points concerning Metallica’s commercial direction beginning in the 90′s. I don’t think it can be underestimated at all how the death of Cliff Burton (and his lack of a voice in the band’s future development) influenced the course of Metallica in the 90′s and beyond. Would there ever have been a load/reload? Would he have left before that?? Who knows…

they went with music industry trends on load and reload. on the black album,i say they sold out because of the complete contradiction of ideals and morals they presented on …and justice for all. now that fast, heavy music is becoming mainstream again, they are “returning to their roots”. don’t get me wrong,i was one of their biggest fans ever,i had a t-shirt for every day of the week, twice over. i’m just saying that it is obvious they became more concerned with money than their previous morals

They Tried new things that ain’t “selling out” like Load and Reload they tried to see the fans reactions

i gotta call bullshit on that one. they definitely “sold out ” on the black album with don’t tread on me. …and justice for all was a totally anti war, anti government album, yet when desert storm was goin’ on,all of the sudden they come out with an album based on “emotionalism”.W.T.F?(not to mention it sounded NOTHING like the metallica we all knew and loved) how convenient that they went from an album based almost completely on on anti-government sentiments to one that supported desert storm!!!

Personally, I think Metallica’s version is better because it is heavier. I just feel that way, (plus the solo sounds incredible).
