I have one on the back of my wrist but my doctor told me to leave it and let it go on it’s own. I’ve had it for about 18 months now and it sometimes looks smaller, like it’s going away but then it comes back. I’m only 14 should I leave it?

@killerdemo: Absolutely – thanks for asking. In fact, a small section of the wrist joint capsule must be removed to make sure it doesn’t come back. This involves opening up the wrist joint itself.

@Yoachan: I think it’s good to show all aspects possible of diagnosis and treatment so patients know what to expect.

I have had mine for 3 years and in the past year I have had it drained 3 times. I will be going again to talk about surgery option…It hurts and I can’t use it well anymore. I’m only 16..

@handarmdoc Ive had surgery twice to get rid of mine and it came back both times. My Dr told me the chance of them returning was quite high, not rare. Mine was also on the back of the wrist. Now I have permanent nerve damage from the surgery. I wish I had just kept getting it drained.

@Lajazyjaz One risk of the surgery is “recurrence” (return) of the cyst – it’s pretty rare – the ones on the palm side of the wrist come back more frequently than those on the top side of the wrist.

@coolchad28: Sometimes even the small cysts can cause pain. The more subtle the problem and symptoms, the more you should think about seeing a hand/wrist specialist. Good Luck!

@killerdemo: An outpatient surgery center should be able to do this for under $3000 – prices vary though. Most places will be able to estimate this for you. There will be a surgeon, facility, and anesthesia fee.
