at 56 years of age, it will be difficult all around. it takes longer for things to heal as you get older. most people have this surgery in their late teens, so when i had the surgery in my late 20s i felt i was old already. but i heard of many other older than me like you that have successfully gone through this surgery. i would saw your recovery will be the most challenging. it will be painful, frustrating and long. but it will be worth it.

I get to get this done in about nine months, and I’m a bit nervous, but hopefully the process won’t be as bad as it looks.

I’m 54 years old and my dentist recommended this surgery. If I have to wear braces for a year and a half first, I would be about 56 when I have this surgery. Not sure I want to go through all of that at my age. Also, I live alone, would I be able to take care of myself after the operation? Please tell me what is the worst part of it all.

I had this done jan 2008, although i not only had my bottom jaw moved back i also had to have my top jaw moved forward. I still have no feeling in my bottom lip 15 months later. But it was so worth it…..

I just had this surgery done March 12th. Its not even been a week yet and I’m miserable. Pain medications are nauseating, I miss food, and I can’t walk 20 ft. without feeling top heavy. Your video gave me a little more hope for my face afterwards but at the moment its so hard. I wouldn’t discourage anyone from having it, although you really need to be serious about after surgery. Luckily, I have no numbness on my lip or chin, but I’m wired shut for 6 weeks.

That’s a great video! I had it done on my lower jaw in 1999 plus bone graphs at the front, your video brought back lots of memories! I also look so much better now! It is worth it!

no. i’m sure i could have lived with my underbite, but personally, i felt the surgery has changed my life and therefore necessary.

it sounds like a successful surgery. my recovery was similar to yours. give it some more time and you’ll be able to open your mouth some more and you should get more sensation back in your lip/chin.

i feel that my speech has been improved with the new position of my jaw/teeth. it is a lot easier to speak now and the words i say are clearer.

yes, it was worth it. having this jaw surgery was the best thing i have ever done. my whole life changed.

yes, i lost weight from the liquid diet.

no, i couldn’t talk with my jaw “wired” shut.

I had the op 7 weeks ago (06/01/09) for an acute overbite, I had massive swelling and bruising under my chin which has now gone, no real pain to speak of just an aching jaw, I currently have a paralysed and numb bottom lip and a numb chin although there seems to be a very slight inprovement in sensation,, I cannot open my mouth very far, about 3 quarters of an inch max at the moment and some open bite areas where i cannot chew food, eating is still difficult really…my new face…FANTASTIC!

hi afb3199! I’d like to ask you if you faced any problems with your speech. Can you speak as you did before the surfery?I am curious to learn about that as I think that the position of your teeth is crusial when we spell words.

I’m not too sure whether you had the the operation for the same reason but my jaw is a too far forwards and i can have surgery to correct it. It’s not necessary for me at this point but i was just wondering, if i ever do have it done, is it worth it in the end? Did you lose weight from the liquid diet? Can you talk with your jaw wired shut ? Thanks

give it some more time. after my surgery, i tried to open my mouth a little wider and wider each day. it did take a long time before i could open my mouth wide again. your jaw just needs to get used to it’s new position.

hi ray, it took about six months after surgery before all sensation came back to my lower lip and parts of my chin. i was stressin as well when it was numb for so long. and yes, the swelling in my lips lasted a long time… but it all eventually went back to normal.

I had my bottom jaw cut at the back and moved forward to line up my teeth. I had bone taken from my hip to fill in the. Gap and was screwed and plated together. Also the front of my jaw cut and slid forward and screwed and plated together. In total I had my jaw moved forward 17 millimeters. After 4 days I don’t have much pain and basically stopped taking pain killers. Still have numbness and tingling in my chin and bottom lip. This shouldn’t last too long should it? It’s quite annoying but worth it in the long run seeing as I’m only 22.
